Tzuyu the Taiwanese Terror

_MG_7354-%ED%8E%B8%EC%A7%91_(2)

This is Tzuyu Chou (pronounced Chewy Chew). She’s the maknae of JYP’s hot new group Twice. She was born on June 14, 1999 but is also the tallest member of the group. She is from Taiwan, and one of their four non-Korean members.

So what’s with the title? Well recently she’s been on a rampage. It all started on My Little Television where she mischievously held a Taiwanese flag that was given to her by producers of the show. Unfortunately no one watches MLT so no one saw it.

Unwilling to give up, Tzuyu went on Chinese national television and gave a very long speech about how Kpop is superior to Cpop in every way and that Taiwan is an independent state and will no long be referred to as the Republic of China. She also threatened to choke out anyone who disagreed, here you can see her doing it to one of her own members.

Well no not really. All she did was say she was from Taiwan when asked (because she is), but according to a known Chinese nationalist troll who also likes holding Taiwanese flags she announced her position as a Taiwanese independence supporter by doing this. This has resulted in Twice’s recent Chinese performance being removed along with all JYP artists’ music being taken down from the Chinese equivalence of Spotify.

Now you might be thinking “but I thought China and Taiwan where different places“, “how does Tzuyu end up being pronounced Chewy?”, or even “how can a 16 year old fix an entire countries government enforced nationalistic ideas?”. Well I don’t know, and I don’t think Tzuyu, JYP, or even the Chinese citizens that now hate her know. Hopefully this just blows over soon, but I doubt it will.

    1. Thanks for the link, I’ll have to read it later. I’ve known a little bit about the Taiwan/China issue for a while but I never knew how serious it was until this Tzuyu drama.
