The reports of Kpopery’s death have been greatly exaggerated

Hello! Sorry I’ve been gone for so long, I’ve been playing a lot of Overwatch very busy. I’ve been bookmarking a lot of things I wanted to post on here so I’ll probably start doing that tomorrow, a lot of it is probably “outdated” though. I’ve noticed I’ve been getting about 10 views a day which is pretty surprising since I haven’t posted anything in a while. It’s pretty cool to see that, hopefully one day it’ll be for my new posts instead of the same Tzuyu ones over and over. That’s all for now, again I’m sorry for not posting anything in a while, I guarantee something will be up by tomorrow (June 18th). Cheers, loves.

Favorite Songs of April 2016

It’s that time again. This month seemed to go by so fast, it felt like March was only a week ago. I don’t have much to say other than I’m typing this from a new keyboard, so lets get right into it.

Laboum – Journey to Atlantis

I somehow forgot Laboum was even having a comeback so the first time I heard this was on a music show. It’s not really what I’d expect a Laboum song to sound like but I still enjoy it. I really love Laboum and I hope one day they can break through and get popular.

JYP – Still Alive & Fire

JYPE have been on fire lately. GOT7 has been pumping out songs, Day6 seem very promising, Twice are dominating with only one single, Wonder Girls’ Reboot was amazing, and now it’s JYP’s turn. Still Alive is a typical JYP song about him being JYP,  if you like JYP you’ll like this. What I’m more interested in is Fire. When I saw Conan was in Korea and met with JYP I figured it’d be short sketch with maybe a joke about JYP’s pants or something so I didn’t care enough to follow what was happening. Instead we got Fire, a JYP song about Conan wanting to party in Korea with cameos from Miss A, Wonder Girls, Twice, and Kpop flavored alcohol. I made this same face the first time I heard Like Ooh-Ahh. God bless JYP.

Eunji – Hopefully Sky

Hopefully Sky (literal translation) is Eunji’s title song on her self written and composed solo debut album. It’s a standard Spring song but Eunji added enough to make it not boring. I love her voice so I’ve been listening to this song a lot even though I don’t normally like this type of music.

Twice – Cheer Up

Twice are back with Cheer Up and an entire mini album of “cheer” style songs. I’m not really sure how I feel about the song. I don’t think it’s terrible but I don’t think it’s great. I love the drum and bass during the chorus and of course Sana’s ShyShyShy, but the rest of the song feels so random. It reminds me of IGAB in some ways. I think MRJ did a good job at explaining what I don’t like about the song in a more technical way, here’s his review if you want to watch.

Lovelyz – Destiny

When I first heard about Lovelyz and saw they were from Woollim this is actually the kind of music I expected them to make. My only disappointment with this song and the album is they never really took advantage of their vocal skills. I understand not doing it in Destiny because it might not fit the song but the rest of the songs on the album were pretty forgettable.

Berry Good – Angel

Normally I list songs in order by their release date but I saved this one for last for a reason. This and Lovelyz’ Destiny sound like they could be a two part song, I’d almost say this sounds more like a Lovelyz song than Destiny does. I just wish the song was a little longer.

Oh! My Girls’ Generation

Last night Oh My Girl did SNSD’s Oh! justice with a cover on The Show. This is probably my favorite SNSD cover so far and I don’t even like the song that much, that’s how good of a job they did. I’m just sad they didn’t cover Mr. Mr. when they were Oh My Boy on April Fools.

I just found out they did a cover of The Boys too, although not as good because they didn’t rerecord the audio like they did with Oh!.

Here’s their April Fools Oh My Boy performance, I really wish they would have done Mr. Mr. with these outfits…

Mr. Mr. done right by AOA, Bestie, and Girl’s Day.

GFriend and Twice also covered SNSD’s Gee on Inkigayo last month, I wasn’t a huge fan though. I don’t know what the bigger sin was, not doing the intro or not giving Jessica’s parts to SinB. I unconsciously decided to use sin when talking about SinB so that’s probably it.

At least it wasn’t as bad as AOA’s Genie cover on The Show…

I don’t think anyone wanted to be there besides Choa and Jimin.

Favorite Songs of March 2016

Wow this month was pretty scary at first. There were almost no songs I liked and I was seriously thinking I wouldn’t even be able to make it to a minimum of five songs, thankfully some last minute releases saved the day.

Snuper – Platonic Love

Super? Sniper? I don’t really get their name. I read a translated explanation that said it’s supposed to be super but even better? I don’t know, it doesn’t really matter. Snuper is a pretty new boy group, Platonic Love is their second title song. I’m a sucker for overly 80’s themed songs so I loved this. The fun music video made it even better. I’ll be looking forward to their future releases.

KNK – Knock

Two boy groups in one month, wow! I wasn’t able to watch many music shows last month so I had no idea these guys existed until I saw what I’m guessing was their goodbye stage. I’m glad I found out about them though. They remind me a bit of K-Much mixed with maybe B.A.P? My only complaint is the audio quality is beyond terrible and almost ruins the song.

Solji & Hani – Only One

Solji & Hani aka Dasoni are back. I don’t have much to say about the song, it sounds like you’d expect a Dasoni song to sound. I prefer Goodbye but I don’t have any complaints about this. Now that Davichi are kinda gone I’m hoping Dasoni can step up and take their place as the only tolerable pop ballad singers.

Fiestar – Mirror

I used to really dislike Fiestar, their older songs just felt so unoriginal to me. That all changed when Black Label came out and became one of my all time favorite albums. Because of that I looked more into the group and ended up loving all of the members too. That being said I don’t like Mirror as much as You’re Pitiful, but I like that they’re using this along with the rest of the album to solidify their style, instead of the random mess of songs they released before Black Label.

Jun Hyoseong – Find Me

Find Me is Hyoseong’s third single, like the others is a slightly generic dance track. I’m not complaining though, these kinds of songs are almost extinct in Kpop so it’s refreshing to hear in a weird way. The rap part really unneeded though.

Oh My Girl – Liar Liar

Oh My Girl is on a hot streak of three really good title songs in a row. It’s rare for rookies to have any good or different songs but they manage to keep doing it. Liar Liar is going back in the Cupid direction which is good, I liked Closer but I don’t want them to end up like f(x) and make an entire album of boring/generic EDM songs. Also unlike Closer the rest of the album is actually good, B612 and 한 발짝 두 발짝 might actually be my favorite OMG songs.

Normally I’d add a few more songs under the closing but that’s really it for this month. April isn’t looking too great so far, it might be time for me to unleash some oldies. Dark Souls 3 is coming out very soon so maybe companies are holding off for a bit to make sure it doesn’t hurt sales…probably not, but I’ll pretend that’s why.
